| At Catherine's, the Abstinence Education Program is designed to assist Teens in Making Healthy Choices now and in the future. In 1995, our mission was to assist pregnant or parenting adolescents by providing the support they needed to attain their high school diplomas, learn job skills and obtain employment. Childcare, personal and group counseling, parenting and life skills, academic tutoring and a caring adult staff are provided at Catherine's House. With these supports, adolescents parents can Make a Healthy Choice for themselves, their children and their future. Over the years prevention programs have been added to serve at risk youth in after school and summer programs. In addition to already existing programs, youth participates in abstinence education sessions. Dedicated professionals provide daily sessions on topics such as avoiding sexual activity outside of marriage; saying "no" to tobacco, alcohol and drugs; choosing supportive friends; contributing to the community; setting realistic goals and believing in themselves. With information and support, teens are Making Healthy Choices. In 2002, Catherine's House began an Abstinence Education Program in local high schools. Supported by a grant from the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, a division of the United States Department of Human Services, Catherine's House provides teachers and 10-course lessons using "Choosing The Best" curriculum to teach abstinence. In addition, selected topics from the curriculum are presented to youth groups, school assemblies, teen clubs, community organizations and church groups in Pulaski County. We hope that the results of the educational program will be that more teens Make Healthy Choices. |
