    Did You Know?

    • You will always have sexual feelings. However, YOU make the choice not to act.
    • Everyone who says that he or she is having sex is not.
    • You can commit to abstinence even if you have had sex.
    • You can express your thoughts and feelings to a person without having sex. Some ways to do this include: writing a love poem, creating a caring card, or writing a love letter.
    • Abstinence gives you time to really know your partner.
    • You can still have a boy/girlfriend, and still be abstinent.
    • Abstinence is the only effective method of birth control.
    • Abstinence is the only full protection from STDs.

IF YOU ARE WALKING THE WALK, THEN ABSTINENCE IS YOUR TALK!

    Making Healthy Choices
At Catherine's, the Abstinence Education Program is designed to assist Teens in Making Healthy Choices now and in the future.

In 1995, our mission was to assist pregnant or parenting adolescents by providing the support they needed to attain their high school diplomas, learn job skills and obtain employment. Childcare, personal and group counseling, parenting and life skills, academic tutoring and a caring adult staff are provided at Catherine's House. With these supports, adolescents parents can Make a Healthy Choice for themselves, their children and their future.

Over the years prevention programs have been added to serve at risk youth in after school and summer programs. In addition to already existing programs, youth participates in abstinence education sessions. Dedicated professionals provide daily sessions on topics such as avoiding sexual activity outside of marriage; saying "no" to tobacco, alcohol and drugs; choosing supportive friends; contributing to the community; setting realistic goals and believing in themselves. With information and support, teens are Making Healthy Choices.

In 2002, Catherine's House began an Abstinence Education Program in local high schools. Supported by a grant from the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, a division of the United States Department of Human Services, Catherine's House provides teachers and 10-course lessons using "Choosing The Best" curriculum to teach abstinence. In addition, selected topics from the curriculum are presented to youth groups, school assemblies, teen clubs, community organizations and church groups in Pulaski County. We hope that the results of the educational program will be that more teens Make Healthy Choices.
